Andrew Yang, an entrepreneur and former presidential candidate, has identified a new wave of startup opportunities centered on a unique business model: returning money to customers rather than extracting it. Inspired by Mark Cuban's Cost Plus Drugs, Yang launched Nobile Mobile in September, a mobile virtual network operator that offers cell services at a significantly lower cost than traditional carriers and provides refunds for customers who use less data.
Yang envisions this approach as a way to address rising living costs, particularly as AI advancements may lead to job displacement and wage compression. He points to several companies, including Cost Plus Drugs and online grocery platform Misfits Markets, that exemplify this trend, where the value proposition focuses on giving back to consumers. Yang believes that businesses that prioritize cost reduction in essential services such as housing, transportation, and food represent a promising market opportunity.
Having gained recognition during his 2020 presidential campaign for advocating Universal Basic Income, Yang continues to emphasize the need for wealth redistribution in light of AI’s impact on labor. He suggests that while government policy may falter, market solutions like Nobile Mobile can forge a direct financial connection between businesses and consumers, fulfilling basic needs more affordably.
