Microsoft will cease publishing new drivers for legacy v3 and v4 printers through Windows Update starting January 15, 2026. This decision affects users of older printers, many of which are still in use despite being over a decade old. Although these printers will remain functional, users will need to source updates directly from manufacturers after the deadline.
Announced in September 2023, this phase-out will occur over several years. From July 1, 2027, non-security updates for third-party printer drivers will no longer be available via Windows Update. Microsoft highlighted that its advancements in print technology, particularly with Mopria, have reduced the necessity for manufacturers to provide their own drivers and utilities.
Despite this transition, users are advised not to panic, as existing devices will continue to operate. The company reassured that updates can still be accessed outside of the Windows Update framework, allowing users to maintain their printing capabilities.
