The upcoming Android 17 is expected to launch in June 2026, marking a significant milestone with its first opt-out feature that does not require a data wipe. Google has transitioned from Developer Previews to a continuous Android Canary channel, aiming for faster release cycles. This new approach replaces the previous two Developer Previews that occurred in late 2025, with the first Beta set for January 2026.
In March, the next beta version will introduce the Platform Stability milestone, which includes final SDK/NDK APIs and app-facing behaviors. Google plans to issue three major Beta releases before the stable launch, aligning with the Quarterly Platform Release (QPR) cycle. The expected releases in April and May are part of this strategy.
Furthermore, Google has indicated planned updates for subsequent quarters, with major releases labeled as “17 QPR1” for Q3 2026 and “17 QPR2” for Q4 2026. The naming convention for these updates has shifted to a year-quarter format, which may provide clearer information about the release timeline.
